Morgan Pottinger McGarvey is honored to be celebrating the firm’s 50th anniversary this year. In 1974, Elmer Morgan and David Pottinger merged their successful law practices to form Morgan & Pottinger, bringing together services focused on financial institutions, banks and automobile dealerships, and the enforcement of creditors’ rights. Today, MPM has grown into a full-service firm representing a diverse clientele, including large and small financial institutions, businesses, and individuals throughout Kentucky and Indiana.
Since its establishment, Morgan Pottinger McGarvey has earned a reputation for excellence in banking and finance law, creditor’s rights, and real estate law. The firm has since broadened its expertise to encompass tax and administrative law, as well as employment law. The firm’s success has been built on the support of our clients as well as the hard work and experience of our team.
Though the firm has remained consistent in providing cost-effective legal representation with the highest level of personal service and attention, Morgan Pottinger McGarvey has experienced a few significant changes over the past half-century. In 1979, the firm relocated to a historic building at 601 West Main Street in Louisville, featuring a cast iron façade from the 1870s, becoming a cornerstone of the revitalized Main Street corridor.
In 1986, the firm merged with Hastie & Murray to establish an office in Lexington, initially known as Morgan Pottinger Hastie & Murray, which was later shortened to Morgan & Pottinger.
In 2016, the firm moved to a new office located in the Brown & Williamson Tower on Louisville’s popular Fourth Street corridor. Meanwhile, the Lexington office moved from 133 Short Street to its current location in the Meyers Building on Main Street, one block from the Fayette County courthouse. Two years later, Morgan & Pottinger, P.S.C. announced that the firm’s name will change to Morgan Pottinger McGarvey in honor of attorney John McGarvey, who has been with the firm throughout its 50 years.
Other attorneys have also dedicated significant time to the firm: Deane Stewart (47 years), John Majors (39 years), Ed Hastie (38 years), Scott Rickman (37 years), Garret Hannegan (35 years), Thurman Senn (30 years) and Tom Fenton (28 years). Legal Assistant Michele Smith has also contributed over 35 years of service to the firm.
The firm’s longevity and the combined experience of our professionals are testaments to the quality of service we provide. Each one of our clients has played a vital role in shaping our firm’s legacy, and we look forward to another 50 years of service.
