The Uniform Law Commission (ULC) has appointed John McGarvey as Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) committee chair for a two-year term. McGarvey has served as Kentucky’s legislative liaison for the ULC since 2006. He was appointed the Southern Region representative on the ULC’s Legislative Council in 2011 and was chairperson of the Legislative Council from 2013-2015. In 2015, McGarvey was appointed as a division chair for the ULC and in that capacity serves on the Permanent Editorial Board for the UCC and as a liaison to several ULC committees.
McGarvey also served on the ULC’s Drafting Committee for the 2010 Amendments to Article 9 and as co-chair of the Enactment Committee for the Amendments, which earned him a Legislative Award in 2013. Additionally, he chaired Kentucky’s drafting committee for Revised Article 9 of the UCC and has headed all Kentucky UCC drafting and implementation efforts since 1986.
McGarvey’s practice concentrates on secured transactions, municipal law, the representation of banks and other lenders in litigation, and matters under the Uniform Commercial Code. His legal accomplishments have also been recognized by his regular inclusion in lists such as Best Lawyers in America (Louisville Lawyer of the Year: Litigation – Banking and Finance 2012 and 2019; Banking and Finance Law 2016), Super Lawyers, Top Rated Lawyers in Banking and Finance, and Preeminent Attorneys.
