The legal needs of financial institutions, lenders, and the business community have never been greater. The evolution of federal and state laws and regulations governing the financial industry and business in general, including commercial codes and consumer protection laws, have created a complex business environment and a real demand for legal compliance and assistance. To meet growing legal responsibilities, experienced counsel is essential for businesses and lenders to minimize legal risks, promote organizational goals, and maximize earnings.
In 1974, Elmer Morgan and David Pottinger merged their successful law practices to form Morgan & Pottinger, bringing together services focused on the business needs of financial institutions, banks, and automobile dealerships, and the enforcement of creditors’ rights. Through the new partnership, the lawyers of Morgan & Pottinger pursued the goal of being a leading provider of efficient and high quality legal services.
In 1979, M&P moved into the historic building at 601 West Main Street in Louisville, Kentucky. With its cast iron façade from the 1870’s, the building was an anchor of the revitalized Main Street corridor. Neighbors included the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts, the Humana Building, the Louisville Slugger Museum, the Louisville Science Center, the Frazier International History Museum, and the Muhammad Ali Center.
In January 2016, the firm moved to a new office located in the Brown & Williamson Tower on Louisville’s popular Fourth Street corridor. This bustling area of the city is home to Fourth Street Live!, a popular dining and entertainment destination, as well as the historic Seelbach Hilton hotel and Louisville Palace theater.
Morgan & Pottinger, P.S.C. announced in September 2018 that the firm name would be changing to Morgan Pottinger McGarvey. The new name honored attorney John McGarvey and his contributions to the firm, legal community and banking industry. This was the first name change in the firm’s nearly 45-year history.
Morgan Pottinger McGarvey’s two primary offices are strategically located in Louisville, the center of commerce and finance for Kentucky and the surrounding region, and in Lexington, internationally renowned for its thoroughbred industry. The firm also has offices in New Albany, Indiana.
Through in depth knowledge and emphasis on outstanding client service, Morgan Pottinger McGarvey has become one of the premier Kentucky-based law firms. We are dedicated to providing our clients quality legal advice and counsel, and there are few firms that can provide such focused experience.
